Background

In January 2009, Polam Hall Junior School held its first art competition. The aim was to share children’s talent with the local community. Art is a great communicator and teaches us all about the world we share. The theme of the competition was ‘Our Environment Matters’. The judging panel was led by world famous photographer, Joe Cornish, and included experienced teachers and moderators of art. The event’s supporters included His Worshipful The Lord Mayor of Darlington, Gallerina, The Arts Centre and the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation.

In January 2010 pupils (4 pupils per entry) and teachers from participating schools gathered in the Liddiard Theatre at Polam Hall School for the prizegiving of our second art competition. The theme was ‘Our Heritage Matters’ and once again the standard of entries was very high. The winning school in each category received a cup and a prize, and every school received a Certificate of Participation. Afterwards, the judges spoke to the pupils about their exhibits

In January 2011 Polam Hall pupils busily prepared to host our third competition. The theme was ‘Our Future Matters’. The different categories enabled all the Polam Hall pupils to be involved in the creation of a piece of artwork and provided a focus for our creative curriculum during the first part of the Spring Term. The public exhibition was very well attended and provided a stimulating and provocative platform for discussion and reflection.

Art gives children a unique means of expression, encouraging an exploration of ideas and developing passion. Please click on the link to view photographs of past exhibits.
