English

At Polam Hall Junior School we recognise that the teaching and learning of English is a fundamental component of the whole primary school curriculum.

Junior School Book Week - Reception girls and staff

Both in school and in the wider world, English is a tool for learning and a medium for communication. Language development includes learning about it's use and the acquisition and application of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Communication is two-way: it involves careful listening and reading to gather information, and then speaking and/or writing to make an appropriate response. Therefore, all aspects of English are inter-related. We aim to provide pupils with learning opportunities which integrate speaking and listening with reading and writing activities.

We aim to promote a love for the English language in its spoken and written forms. Our pupils are encouraged to develop the skills needed to communicate effectively when talking and writing, to listen with understanding and to be responsive, enthusiastic and knowledgeable readers.

An important aim of all our teaching across the curriculum must be to develop our pupils’ ability to use language to explore, think, organise and communicate. This includes providing our pupils with opportunities to use ICT to enhance and extend their learning.

We recognise the need to provide a wide variety of stimulating and enriching activities and experiences in which children are encouraged to communicate and express themselves effectively, creatively and above all, confidently.

Whenever possible, the teaching and learning of English should be fun, and therefore memorable, with high expectations of success. This will enable every pupil to achieve her potential and develop self-esteem. An atmosphere of encouragement, support and respect for the achievements of every pupil is fostered.
