Physical Development

Children move confidently and imaginatively with increasing control and co-ordination and an awareness of space and others.

They use a range of small and large equipment and balancing and climbing apparatus, with increasing skill. They handle appropriate tools, objects, construction and malleable materials safely and with increasing control.

Children of all ages learn by being active, and the latest research on child development has advised that sixty minutes of physical activity is required each day as an optimum.

All children in Early Steps Foundation Stage Unit, can access the outside environment at any time during the day, and test themselves physically in an enclosed environment and under the close supervision of trained staff. Physical Development helps young children gain confidence in what they can do, and promotes a sense of well being.

In Upper Foundation children are taught PE by a specialist teacher and are taught skills and games to encourage co-ordination both in the gymnasium and the outside garden area.

Large and small equipment can be used to encourage an awareness of space, themselves and others.

During the Summer Term all of the children come together for their Teddy Toddle and the annual Sports Day, during which everyone has lots of fun and games.

The children also have movement and dance sessions both formally as a group, and informally in small spontaneous groups linking in with their play and interests. This develops physical skills and co-ordination in a supportive and fun loving environment.
