Teaching and Learning

Children are learning all the time, learning to make sense of and control the world they live in.

Learning in Different Ways

When working with the various activities we provide, they are thinking, learning to plan and solve problems, and learning to communicate with others. Due to their inner drive to understand the world, they are curious and we expect them to investigate and examine everything. This way they learn to think for themselves and become independent learners.

Some activities will be undertaken independently on the children's own initiative, whilst others will be teacher-directed. This ensures continuity and stability, and encourages the learning of new concepts.

Children will have opportunity to work both inside and in our outdoor classroom, which is a colourful and vibrant environment.

Curriculum

The Foundation Stage curriculum will be both formal and informal. We assess the children by stage, not age, so every child can fulfil his or her potential. The curriclum is continually updated and is implemented by trained staff, who work in partnership with parents to ensure that every child's needs are being met. We follow the Development Matters statement from the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.

Using techniques of learning through play, the children will be encouraged to accomplish the 'six early learning goals', which are outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage document, a statutory framework published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

These areas of learning are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development
