Senior School
ICT
Information and Communication Technology is a compulsory subject for years seven to nine and can be chosen as an optional subject at GCSE level.
The subject is very practical and pupils have the chance to express their creativity.
Curriculum Statement
In years seven and eight pupils learn and develop skills using word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation and publishing software. In each year, five units are studied and the work is project-based. Some project examples include preparing presentations for Open Days, creating Web Pages for fictional businesses and building a database of books owned by pupils.
In year nine pupils study OCR's Certificate or Diploma New CLaIT qualification (Level 1). Students passing three modules qualify for a Certificate whilst those requiring a challenge can attempt five units to qualify for a Diploma. The main areas studied include word processing, spreadsheets, databases, DTP, multimedia presentations and web page development.
At GCSE level the AQA examination board is followed. Again this requires practical project coursework totalling 60% of the marks and pupils take an external examination for the remaining 40%. The course contains three units; two practical controlled assessment units and one written examination.
This course is a popular choice at GCSE as pupils recognise the importance of continually updating and improving their ICT skills.
