Business Studies

Business Studies is an optional subject that can be chosen at GCSE level. The examination board studied is Edexcel.

This is a lively, practical subject that allows pupils to explore the business world and learn how businesses are set up and run.

In year ten pupils have opportunities to pursue their own business ideas by running a mini-enterprise business selling products at the school's Christmas Fair and in the summer term they participate in the Bannatyne's Bright Sparks Competition. Pupils present a business plan to a panel of judges, including Duncan Bannatyne, in a Dragon's Den style competition.

In 2008 Polam Hall students won the competition, beating teams from all other local schools. They were awarded a trophy and a cheque for £1000.

Subjects studied on the GCSE course include Business Planning, Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, Production and the external environment.

Students take two external examinations totalling 75% of the marks and have to complete a Controlled Assessment for the remaining 25%. For this they are required to research a local business issue and produce a report in controlled conditions. This replaces coursework.

This subject is a popular choice at GCSE and students achieve good grades. Pupils enjoy the subject and value the importance of learning about the environment in which they will one day work.
