LANGUAGE STUDY ABROAD

Exciting language opportunities are on offer to students studying AS/A level languages.

For the past few years, students have enjoyed a week of intensive language tuition on the Côte d'Azur in the south of France and stayed with host families - thus boosting their language proficiency in both academic and in social spheres. The beautiful location of the Language School in Nice, just a five minute walk to the sea, open air cafes and the magnificent Promenade des Anglais combines the cultural richness of the area with the cosmopolitan atmosphere of an international study centre.

There are similar opportunities on offer in Spain and Germany. These experiences are always thoroughly enjoyed by students and offer a welcome boost to their confidence in respect of speaking and listening skills.

Here are some comments from students who attended the 2012 course.

'The host family was lovely-very open and chatty and the food was delicious.

The lessons at the school were focussed but relaxed. This was perfect as it meant that we could understand all the information. We learnt a great deal. The staff were friendly and in no way intimidating. They made me feel very welcome. The planned activities were a perfect way to take a break from work,to socialise and have a good time. I wish I could go again!'

'The location of the school was good in the town centre. At first I was nervous but once I got to know the other students, it was ok. The afternoon lessons in particular were fun but the best bit was meeting new people and speaking a lot of French. If I got the chance, I would go again'

'I liked the way the lessons were presented. The student/teacher interaction was good. I felt very comfortable at the school. The best part was being exposed to so much spoken French. It helped greatly my listening skills, my accent and vocabulary. Everyone was very friendly and the social activities were very enjoyable especially the bowling! Our host's cooking was delicious!

I would definitely go again. It was AMAZING!'

My ‘Nice’ Experience by Alex Craggs

When I first got to France I was quite nervous as I was worried about how I was going to be able to talk to a French lady, in French, for a whole week! But when we arrived at her apartment, I was soon at ease, she was very friendly and she was very helpful when we didn't understand what she was asking.

On the first day, we explored Nice, walking along the Promenade and around the old town and Mrs Harvey showed us our way to the school. The people at the school were really friendly and the teachers were very helpful and we all soon made friends with the others there. At lunch times and after lessons we had lots of time to do what we wanted like go the beach, swim in the sea, or even hire rollerblades and the school also organised a number of activities for us to do which was great fun. The lessons were really helpful as it improved your ability to listen in French and we did a variety of reading, writing, listening and speaking tasks. Although we did get some homework, it was not too much and so I think it was really helpful to improve your French and a great week away!
