Sixth Form
Physics
At Polam Hall we study AQA Physics A.
The course is classed as the more traditional course and it provides a seamless transition from the AQA science GCSE’s. It is suitable for students who have studied Additional Science or the full Physics GCSE. In past years I have been disappointed, that despite gaining excellent GCSE grades, many students seem hesitant about continuing their physics studies into A level. In the very competitive market for University places and with physics often classed as a difficult A level, students can be deterred from studying physics as they strive for A*s
I would like to reassure students that although I will never admit to physics being an easy subject, students are as likely to gain excellent marks in physics as other academic subjects as long as they are interested in the subject and have good numerical and logical skills.
A level Physics can be studied as a route into a science or engineering course or just for the enjoyment and the fact that it is a highly regarded A level.
The AS course comprises of 3 units.
Units 1 & 2 are examined by written examinations at the end of each unit and both contain a good mixture of traditional physics and more contemporary topics.
Unit 1 topics include:
1. Particles and radiation ( new particles such as quarks and neutrinos)
2. The photoelectric effect
3. Electrical current
4. Resistivity
5. Electromotive force
Unit 2 main topics include:
1. Resolving forces (mechanics)
2. The application of moments
3. Newton’s laws of motion
4. Properties of materials
5. Properties of waves including interference and diffraction
The A2 course develops many of the AS topics and also gives the students the opportunity to choose from one of the following options:
A. Astrophysics
B. Medical Physics
C. Applied Physics
D. Turning Points in Physics
Last year the students chose to study medical physics but the option will depend on the student’s interests.
ISA's
Both AS and A2 have units where marks are awarded for Investigative Skills Assessments, ISA’s.
Equipment
The Physics lab is well equipped with a good range of traditional equipment e.g. oscilloscopes, spectrometers, capacitors, lasers, multimeters and we are always increasing our data logger and sensor collection so there are endless opportunities for learning through experiments. I like to think we have the best collection of 'toys' in the school !
